Active speakers set up as part of a music audio system

If you are new to music, it is best to start by getting a good active speaker. An active speaker is an important part of an audio system and determines the sound quality it produces. So first, get to know the types of active speakers. What are they? Read on.

Types of Active Speakers

1. Woofer Active Speakers

A woofer is a speaker that handles frequencies from 20 to 2,000 Hz. It responds well to low sounds, so it is no surprise that people often use it to play hard bass, a music genre focused on bass.

With a woofer, you can find the sweet spot in low sound, so hard bass tracks sound great. In size, woofers usually range from 4 inches to 12 inches. Woofers are generally combined with a midrange and a tweeter to make the sound stronger.

2. Subwoofer Active Speakers

Besides the woofer, the best active speakers also include the subwoofer type. Although both respond well to low-frequency signals, they are not the same. Heard in passing, a woofer and a subwoofer produce almost similar sound.

But the numbers are very different. A subwoofer covers a much lower frequency range, from 20 to 200 Hz, so it can produce better bass. That is why big stages usually choose this type. Its size is around 12 inches to 21 inches, which suits a large stage.

3. Tweeter

Next is the tweeter, which generally has the smallest size, at most only 4 inches. Even though it is small, do not underestimate its sound quality. Working at high frequencies, from 3,500 Hz to 20 kHz, the tweeter can produce a piercing sound.

That is why this type of speaker is often nicknamed the little chili pepper: it is small, yet it produces thunderous sound. You can also get drum cymbals from a tweeter. If you want punchier sound, don't forget to put a tweeter on the stage.

4. Mid Range

A midrange is usually found only in the best active speakers with a 3-way system configuration. At around 4 to 6 inches, this type of speaker helps refine the sound produced. It usually works together with the woofer and tweeter to produce more focused, clearer sound.

Those are some of the types of active speakers. Some are sold directly by type and some come as a package in a 2-way or 3-way system configuration, so you can choose according to your needs.
