Since the pandemic began, the terms online and offline learning (daring and luring in Indonesian) have come up often among parents and students. Many of them compare the two systems, even though each learning model has its own advantages. Here is what you need to know!

What Online and Offline Learning Mean

At its core, teaching and learning exist to improve abilities and build new knowledge. To reach that goal, learning needs to be designed and planned as well as possible. Good learning design usually involves interaction among learners, learning resources and the environment.

Since early 2020, when the coronavirus reached Indonesia, the education system has changed. Activities that used to be held offline and face to face at school moved online, as distance learning from each person's home. It happened because the situation required it.

Before going deeper, it helps to know what online and offline learning mean. Online learning is teaching and learning done at a distance with the help of technology and an internet connection. The Indonesian term daring is itself short for dalam jaringan, meaning "in the network."

Offline learning, on the other hand, is teaching and learning done outside the internet network. Offline learning usually does not use an internet connection or computers. It therefore has to be done face to face in one place, whether at school or somewhere else.

Advantages of Online Learning

In general, every kind of learning has its own advantages. One advantage of online learning is that it makes people more tech-savvy. The pandemic that hit the world forced us to use technology well in order to carry on with our activities as usual.

As a result, students and teachers alike have had to learn to use technology, including how to operate it. That demand has helped us understand better how technology works. The teaching and learning process can therefore keep going even when it has to be held at a distance.

Advantages of Offline Learning

The advantage of offline learning is that students can be clearly monitored. That is because the learning takes place face to face. Teachers can more easily watch students' activities, both academic and non-academic. Because the activities are monitored, teachers can encourage students' development.

Each learning model has different advantages, and both can be applied depending on the situation. In fact, since the new normal took effect, many schools have been running learning that combines both models, one of them being Sekolah Murid Merdeka, or SMM.
